Officers searched the school and found a man, who was not carrying any weapons, hiding

MID:Premier says govt treating public mugs

New South Wales Premier BARRY O'FARRELL says the federal government is treating the
public like mugs by telling them they'll be better off under a carbon tax compensation
scheme.

Federal Climate Change Minister GREG COMBET will today announce the details of a billion
dollar compensation package .. which he claims will leave millions of households better
off than they are now.

But Mr O'FARRELL .. who campaigned against the carbon tax in the lead up to his landslide
win at the March 26 state election .. has today ridiculed the claim.

He says he'll speak to Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD about the tax when the two met

FED:Abbott tells GetUp! to get real

CANBERRA, Aug 16 AAP - Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has told political advocacy group
GetUp! to "get real" for using remarks he made in the 1970s for its latest political advertisement.

Mr Abbott says the television ad shows the left-leaning group, with more than 375,000
members, is operating as an arm of the Labor Party.

He challenged GetUp! to dig up comments Prime Minister Julia Gillard made when she
was president of the Australian Union of Students.

"If GetUp!'s fair dinkum they would go back and they would pick quotes from Julia Gillard
back in the 1970s," he told ABC Radio on Monday.

"I just think that GetUp! ought to get real frankly."

The advertisement features women repeating comments Mr Abbott has made on issues such
as abortion and climate change.

"It would be folly to expect that women would ever dominate or even approach equal
representation in a large number of areas," one woman says of 1979 Abbott quote.

"Simply because their aptitudes, abilities, and interests are different for physiology
reasons," she continues.

A second woman uses another quote from Mr Abbott: "I won't be rushing out to get my
daughters vaccinated against cervical cancer".

A third says: "Abortion is the easy way out".

GetUp! has released several political ads during the campaign, including one parodying
Ms Gillard and Labor's climate change policy.

Qld: Street riot west of Brisbane "concerning": Minister

By David Barbeler

BRISBANE, April 7 AAP - Police have charged more than 20 people over a street riot
west of Brisbane last month in which three men suffered gunshot wounds.

Violence erupted about 3am (AEST) on March 14 in Highbury Drive, Redbank Plains, with
a 22-year-old man suffering a gunshot wound to his buttocks, while a 21-year-old was shot
in the leg and a bullet grazed the shoulder of a 19-year-old.

Police on Tuesday charged 21 people with rioting and all of them are due to appear
in Ipswich Magistrates Court on May 5.

On Wednesday, Queensland Police Minister Neil Roberts said the incident highlighted
deep concerns over the behaviour of street gangs.

"Any altercation involving violence of this nature is obviously a concern to the community,"

he said.

"The people are involved in car clubs allegedly, but the matter is before the courts
so we are very limited in what we can say."

Mr Roberts praised the work of police involved in the investigation into the riot,
codenamed Operation Ice Iguana.

"Police have done a fantastic job here. They've got over 20 people equally split between
these two groups before the courts, that's great police work," he said.

Mr Roberts also commended the hard work of the recently-established Street Gang Project
team, a 12-month trial announced in January to curb gang-related violence.

"This is all about trying to nip in the bud some of the activities of these groups
before they become a real problem in a criminal sense," he said.

"You have to get the intelligence and understand what's happening in these groups to
make sure they don't develop into that next stage."

A police media spokeswoman said although some offenders left quickly after the Redbank
Plains incident, police managed to interview a large number of people.

She said Operation Ice Iguana then conducted an "intense" three-week investigation
using those statements, which allowed them to identify 21 people allegedly involved.

Investigations are continuing.

FED: Cultural change in workplace essential: Gillard

FED: Cultural change in workplace essential: Gillard

SYDNEY Aug 25, AAP - Australia's ability to weather the economic downturn is dependent
on cultural change in the workplace, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says.

In her opening address in Sydney to the world's largest industrial relations conference,
Ms Gillard signalled the need to build partnerships between bosses, workers and unions.

She said with unemployment at 5.8 per cent and the budget forecasting a peak of 8.5
per cent by June 2011, cooperation and innovation was needed to protect jobs.

Ms Gillard said the introduction of Fair Work laws was only the beginning, not the
end of the reform process.

"Australians should now move beyond a focus on law changes to a new focus on cultural
change in the workplace," she told the conference on Tuesday.

"Change of this sort is slower to take root than rapid structural reform.

"It is more dependent on intangibles, including the good will and motivation of those
who take part."

Ms Gillard contrasted the federal government's vision with the previous government's
Work Choices, calling it a "model based on conflict".

"We believe we have successfully found a balance in the new Fair Work Act," she said.

"The previous Work Choices laws set out to unashamedly make it impossible for unions
to effectively represent their members."

Workers now had a choice as to whether to join a union, represent themselves or be
represented by anyone they choose, she said.

"There will no longer be union or non-union agreements - all agreements will be made
directly with employees. Where 50 per cent of employees approve an agreement, the agreement
is made.

"There is no back to the future, no return to pattern bargaining and no return to centralised
determination of wages and conditions."

The 15th World Congress for the International Industrial Relations Association continues
in Sydney until Thursday.

The Nationals say they fear Labor may raise the fuel excise in next month's federal

Nationals senator JOHN WILLIAMS says it'll hurt country people .. and has urged the
government not to see the fuel excise as a "soft target" due to lower world oil prices.

Senator WILLIAMS says the fuel excise climbed from 6.3 cents a litre to 34 cents a
litre under the Hawke and Keating governments .. while the Howard government froze it
at 38 cents a litre since 2000.

He says if the Rudd government increases the excise .. it'll particularly affect country

Tas: Arsonists attack heritage building - fire officer

HOBART, Dec 10 AAP - A gang of arsonists have attacked a Tasmanian heritage-listed
building, lighting six fires but causing little damage.

Tasmania Fire Service district officer Rob Deverell said youths were believed to have
deliberately lit the fires inside and outside of Waratah Community Hall in Tasmania's
west about 6.30pm (AEDT) yesterday.

The hall is more than 100 years old and its community recently spent thousands of dollars
renovating the historic building.

Four fire units attended the scene and damage to its structure was avoided, Mr Deverell said.

"Police are carrying out further investigations," Mr Deverell said.

"The community recently raised $20,000 to renovate the hall.

"At the moment the community is very small and they are about to start up a couple
of mines in the town so this would have been a blow to them if had been lost."

Fed: Australia yet to decide if it will join force for Lebanon

ADELAIDE, Aug 3 AAP - The Australian government had yet to decide whether it would
commit troops to a multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon, Defence Minister Brendan
Nelson said today.

Dr Nelson said any Australian deployment would be in a "niche" area".

"Our position is clear, and that is that if an international stabilisation force is
sent to South Lebanon, that it ought to be one of a very large size, you would need 10,000
to 20,000 troops," he told reporters in Adelaide.

"It should also be one which is able to work with and support the Lebanese army in
securing south Lebanon, it should also be under the charter which disarms Hizbollah.

"If the Australian government chooses to make a defence force contribution to the stabilisation
force, it is likely to be in a relatively niche area and I'm not prepared to go into more
about it at the moment."

Fed: Jackman in training for Boy From Oz arena musical

By Jonathon Moran, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, Feb 13 AAP - Hugh Jackman has until August to get in shape to play Peter Allen
in the physically gruelling stage musical, The Boy From Oz.

And he's well underway with an intense training regime.

"I was kayaking on the harbour this morning at 6am," Jackman told AAP in Sydney today.

"I have got to get very fit again and strong. I am dancing and doing a lot of yoga.

Having done it for a year (on Broadway) eight times a week, I am confident I can do it."

Following the success of the Broadway production of the same name, Jackman and producers
Ben Gannon and Robert Fox are bringing the show home - but this time it has been upsized.

The arena musical will start at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on August 3, with tickets
to go on sale on February 27.

The show will then travel to Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, and there is talk of
dates to be set in Perth.

For Australia, Chrissy Amphlett will play Judy Garland and Angela Toohey will play
Allen's ex-wife Liza Minnelli.

Allen's mother, Marion Woolnough, will be played by Colleen Hewett.

"I am really excited about taking the show to the next level," said Jackman, who won
a prestigious Tony Award for his energetic performance on Broadway.

"It is new territory for me, mate. This is my rock star dream, I suppose.

Critics lauded Jackman's portrayal of Allen - the flamboyant and energetic boy from
Tenterfield in north-western NSW, who helped define the disco era in the 1970s and 80s,
before succumbing to AIDS in 1992 - in the Broadway production.

The first Boy From Oz production opened in Sydney in March 1998 and went on to become
the most successful new Australian musical ever staged.

Dancing with the Stars judge Todd McKenney was in the lead role then, with Jackman
taking on the Broadway lead in October 2003.

That production ended in September last year and there has been much speculation about
Jackman possibly taking the musical to London's West End, Las Vegas or Los Angeles.

Following Australia, Jackman would like to take the production to London.

"If this works ... I hope that we could do it in London and maybe back in America," said Jackman.

Jackman last performed on the Australian stage eight years ago, playing screenwriter
Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard.

The actor, who studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, is one
of Australia's biggest stars in Hollywood.

His film credits include Swordfish, Van Helsing, Kate and Leopold, Someone Like You
and the X-Men films.

He's got a number of releases over the next 12 months including the third X-Men movie,
Scoop, Happy Feet, The Fountain, The Prestige, Flushed Away, Wolverine and Good.

And Jackman said his role in The Boy From Oz had increased his credibility as a performer.

"Spielberg saw it, lots of people saw it and see me now in a different way," he said.

"That was not my intention ... some people thought I was nuts to take it on."

SA: Controller mistake plunged aircraft into rapid descent

AAP General News (Australia)
04-27-2005
SA: Controller mistake plunged aircraft into rapid descent

ADELAIDE, April 27 AAP - A mistake by an air traffic controller was among a number
of communication lapses that plunged a commercial flight from Melbourne to Adelaide into
a rapid descent last year, a report into the incident has found.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said the Boeing 737 was approaching Adelaide
on March 9 using an instrument landing system (ILS) when it went into a rapid descent,
falling at about 2,000 metres per minute.

The pilot managed to regain control of the aircraft, pull out of the descent and land
without incident.

The ATSB said the air crew had been directed by an air traffic controller to use ILS
even though there had been previous notifications that the system was being worked on
and was not to be used that day.

It said about 40 seconds before the plane entered the ILS glide path the pilots were
told that they were cleared for the ILS approach.

"The pilot in command acknowledged and read back the clearance," the ATSB report said.

"The controller later reported that at the time the fact that the glide path was not
available had slipped his mind.

"The inadvertent slip by the approach controller was the final action of a number of
lapses or omissions that led the pilots to believe the ILS was available, despite previous
advice."

As a result of the incident the aircraft operator issued two safety briefings to pilots
and an Airservices (Airservices) Australia investigation found that while there were adequate
safeguards in the system, many had been breached.

The ATSB said Airservices Australia had since issued 19 recommendations of which 10
had already been acted on and the remaining nine would come into force by June 30 this
year.

binary

binary [Lat: ‘two’] Relating to anything having just two alternatives, or based on such (see below), in contrast with the steps of 10 and its powers for decimal and its compounds, of 12 for duodecimal, 16 for hexadecimal, 20 for vigesimal, 60 for sexagesimal, etc. In both the material and the electrical worlds, from the presence or absence of an item (e.g. a hole in a card, the on/off of electricity) to the north/south polarity of magnetism, the binary state is of widespread natural significance. Hence, although efforts to mimic decimal notation have been made, the binary state epitomizes computers, and hence the electromagnetic equivalents of binary notation are their normal internal form for representing numbers. The immediate compounds of binary are quaternary for steps of 4, octal for steps of 8, and hexadecimal for steps of 16.

Eleven Ways the Internet is Playing Havoc with Every Business.

Referring to Wal-Mart's upcoming remake of its Web site, one analyst said it will give retailing a "jolt" and another said it will "change Internet retailing." Evie Black Dykem of Forrester Research, Inc. said it "will be the shot heard round the retail world." When the world's largest retailer stakes it's claim on the Internet, many predict life will never be the same.

"The power to navigate the world at the click of a mouse is a force that is transforming our lives like none before," wrote the editors of Business Week (Oct. 4, 1999). A few paragraphs later, they added, "Anyone with a computer is a citizen of the world -- and a richer world at that."

The extent of the Internet's impact on life and business can be measured by Merrill Lynch's willingness to place at risk its sales force of 14,800 stockbrokers as the company heads straight into the e-economy. When all Merrill Lynch's explanations and assurances of protecting its brokers are stripped away, it's clear the company sees that its future is on the Net.

Auto manufacturers are right there, too. The move to cut costs by cutting out dealers is clear. That's the goal. And it's driven by the possibilities created by the Internet.

Whether it's real estate sales or travel agencies, these are functions that will soon be Net-based.

But beyond the obvious impact of the Internet on business, such as displacing stockbrokers or bookstore clerks, it is disrupting American business. One can surmise that full employment without inflation is only possible in an Internet world where prices are actually dropping for many products and services. The deep discounts on books would not have occurred were it not for the Internet.

The individual changes brought about by the Internet are dramatic and far-reaching but they are overwhelming when taken together. No business will escape the disruptions caused by an e-economy. Here are 11 ways the Internet is playing havoc with every business.

1 Lowering prices. A quick look around a CompUSA store tells the story. "Where are the computers?" someone asks. They are hidden away down in the back, and software is center stage along with such electronic devices as PDAs. Computer consulting firms were the first to drop hardware because of paper-thin margins. Next it will be the stores.

Whether it's for computers or airline tickets, the ability for customers to use the Web to "shop" is unequalled.

Inflationary pressures are weak even with full employment and high consumer demand, thus challenging a near sacred economic dictum. Is the Internet playing a role in keeping prices down?

2 Reducing costs. Whether it's the ability to handle more business with fewer people or being able to do it faster, the costs associated with doing business are coming down.

For example, graphic design firms have long relied on what are called "stock photos" for brochures and ads. This is high quality photography that is purchased on a one-time basis for specific projects. The Internet has changed the picture. Not only can stock photos now be downloaded, they can be purchased for a fraction of the former rental fee. Graphic designers now have a broader selection available for a lower cost.

Even the use of basic e-mail eliminates the need to send materials by mail or using a delivery device.

3 Extending reach. In one 12-hour period, we received two inquiries from magnet manufacturers in China asking us to consider selling their products. Quite obviously, they had entered "magnet" as a keyword and turned up our "magnet marketing" concept.

Perhaps as much as a single Internet site, ebay.com has changed the way consumers and business persons look at the issue of location. A successful antique dealer closed his doors and transferred his business to ebay.com. No longer is he limited by the price and taste and peculiarities of a particular locale.

4 Giving customers control. Perhaps the most stressful change or many businesses is the fact that customers no longer look to them for product-type information. Today, because of the ability to do extensive research quickly via the Web, customers are informed before they access a dealer. Automobile sales is a good example. Customers now arrive in the showroom having made their buying decisions in advance and knowing what they are willing to pay for the vehicle of choice, and they resent having to encounter inept and overbearing salespeople.

This has changed the role of the salesperson. No longer the "persuaders," salespeople are now facilitators. The most successful are those who identify what customers want to accomplish and then help them achieve it.

5 Eliminating middlemen. Distribution channels are changing rapidly. While it is known today as disintermediation, let's call it what it is: cutting out the middleman. Why shouldn't you get your next car loan via the Internet if you can save money and do it quickly? Although a primary goal is to lower costs, an equally important objective is getting closer to the customer.

Being "nearby" doesn't mean that you're close to a customer. A business owner reported that he has two mortgages and a car loan at a bank and the bank has never once approached him for more business. More precisely, the bank hasn't taken the time to recognize opportunities to build a closer relationship with him.

The Internet is quite different because the focus is on the information provided by the customer. The person getting a car loan from an Internet lender will be afforded other opportunities to do businesses based on the data supplied. In effect, the Internet bank may understand the customer better than the one with bricks and mortar.

6 Broadening choices. Someone looking for a digital camera would never expect to find all available models in one store, let alone evaluation reports on each one. And if it were possible to have them all on display in one place, the selection process would be long, arduous and probably less than satisfying. In the final analysis, the salesperson might well cast the deciding vote to end the frustration. The same is true for automobiles, colleges, computers and just about anything else.

But because of the Internet, we've come to expect a broad range of choices. In fact, we demand it and we feel shortchanged to shop in a store where we have a narrow range of choices.

7 Demystifying sales. It may not be popular to discuss it, but selling has been based on guiding, directing and influencing the customer to make a particular buying decision. Salespeople were happiest when they held the reins, sensing that prospects were dependent upon them and waiting for the customer to say the magic words, "What do you think I should do?" Having visited a variety of Web sites, customers are loaded with data and information and with all this the mystery is drained from the sales process.

The fallout from this is earth-shaking. Face-to-face selling is in jeopardy. Not in every industry and not everywhere, of course, but customers have discovered that they can negotiate easily and successfully for everything -- from hotel rooms to homes - on the Internet. As a result, watch for a backlash. Instead of wanting to deal with "a live human being," the trend will be to choose technology-rich venues where a person does not intrude in the process.

8 Making information essential. Perhaps one of the most far-reaching changes brought about by the Internet is that the customer expects to receive worthwhile information, not glitzy ad copy. On every page of a large insurance organization's Web site is a "Buy Now" button. In fact, it's the first item the visitor encounters. What's painfully obvious is the company's inability to understand the customer, even though the site is dripping with words like "customer commitment."

Web site visitors are not there to be sold; they are there to be better informed so they can make the best possible buying decisions.

Most Web sites make the fatal mistake of attempting to replicate the face-to-face selling situation where they feel personal presence, selling techniques and persuasion make a difference. In effect, they send the customer the message that their only interest is to sell something, not serve the customer's interest.

9 Redefining service. The concept of service has changed. Just saying "we're here to serve you" doesn't connect with customers. The issue is now serving customers when, where and how they want. There was a time when we would wait somewhat patiently in a line at the bank or McDonald's. Not any more. If we go into McDonald's or Dunkin' Donuts, we're upset if there's someone in line ahead of us.

If we buy something on the Internet, we expect instant confirmation of the transaction. Anything less is viewed as second-rate or unacceptable. Next day delivery has become the standard.

10 Altering communication. Several years ago, faxing was faster than email. There were times when it took several hours for someone to receive an e-mail. Now, at most times of the day, the Internet is so fast we can conduct actual "e-mail conversations."

Rather than a send-and-wait-to-receive process, communication has been elevated to instant send-and-receive, a seamless. updating that does not provide for "pauses" for action to take place. This may well be the source of the stress that plagues so many workers, and it may also be driving the desire for new ways to be wired in a wireless world. There is no time for interruptions in the communication process. The customer, internal or external, who doesn't get an instant response feels abused.

11 Upending the buying process. Customers are performing their due diligence before they let it be known they are in the market to make a purchase. It might even be called guerilla buying since the customer doesn't surface until the moment they are ready to make the purchase.

This is why information-rich Web sites have emerged as an essential marketing tool. The goal is to connect with the customer in a manner that fits. In effect, marketing is the most critical element in the process. Its job is to send "signals," keywords or images that serve as hooks to attract customers so they can be brought into a company's orbit willingly. The primary job is no longer to be "out there" trying to make sales because today's prospects remain mostly invisible, surfacing only when they are ready to reveal themselves.
