Fed: December building approvals down 3.5 per cent

CANBERRA, Feb 2 AAP - The building sector has slumped with new figures showing a 3.5
per cent fall in December approvals.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the total number of dwelling units approved
in December fell 3.5 per cent to 12,168.

In the year to December, building approvals fell 8.9 per cent.

The number of private sector homes approved during the month dropped 3.3 per cent to 8,258.

Over the past 12 months, private sector home approvals have risen 0.1 per cent.

The number of private sector other dwellings approved was down 0.6 per cent to 3,728.

Over the full year, private sector other dwellings was down 22.2 per cent.

The estimate of the value of total building approved fell 6.8 per cent, to $4.6 billion.

The value of new residential buildings approved fell 1.2 per cent, to $2.427 billion.

The value of alterations and additions fell 8.4 per cent to $412.9 million.
