Bureaucrats (BRISBANE)

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says the state's top bureaucrats are getting huge
bonuses, but he has refused to exactly say how much each one is getting.

The premier says the bureaucrats are, as he put it, at risk of being kicked to death
by the media if the state government reveals the size of their bonus packages.

He is battling persistent challenges by the Opposition to release details of the so-called
fat cat bonuses.

But Mr BEATTIE says Queensland's Director-Generals are eligible for pay bonuses of
between $20,300 and $29,700 on top of salaries of between $135,500 and $198,000.

He says the bonuses are an important management tool to stimulate high performance
from bureaucratic chiefs.

Mr BEATTIE says every year he sits down and has an ugly meeting with them and he expects
them to perform.

But Queensland Opposition leader ROB BORBIDGE says people are entitled to know how
much each Director-General receives in bonuses.
