Abu Ghraib -- the prison made notorious for its cruelty to inmates under Saddam Hussein and now known around the world as where Americans abused Iraqi prisoners -- is casting a pall that threatens to undermine national morale.
It needs immediate and effective countering to revive American self-confidence and to begin to rebuild America's reputation around the world. The several investigations under way not only have to probe deeply and go beyond low-ranking offenders. They also must provide remedies that can be seen as cauterizing the self-inflicted wound and eliminating any infection.
