Forces fighting for Kandahar airport control: ; U.S. jets focus on potential hide-outs for bin Laden

KABUL, Afghanistan - Anti-Taliban fighters battled for control ofKandahar's airport today as American bombers pounded suspected hide-outs of Osama bin Laden in the rugged White Mountains near theborder with Pakistan.

Fighters loyal to former Kandahar governor Gul Agha said theyfought their way into the airport compound, but were pushed back byTaliban defenders, according to Agha's brother, Bismillah.

Kandahar is the Taliban's last major stronghold. Agha's forceshave been advancing on the city from the south, while troops loyalto former deputy foreign minister Hamid Karzai have been closing infrom the north.
