VIC: Police appeal for witnesses to assault on cabbie

MELBOURNE, Feb 20 AAP - A Melbourne cab driver's passengers beat him before running
off with his night's takings, police said.

Police say they want to talk to the occupants of a car that slowed down when driving
past the assault in inner-suburban Fairfield on Heidelberg Road at about 2.45 am.

The four passengers, two men and two women, forced the driver to stop, hand over the
money and get out of his car. They then attacked and beat him.

The 20-year-old driver told police one passenger threatened him with a screwdriver.

He suffered bruising from the bashing.
